It doesn’t matter if you are a small or large business, a club or an organization, you have employees, athletes, members, coaches, fans and customers. All of them need to be kept in the loop on one level or another.
Forget the letter and the stamp. A what? Yes, a stamp! The fax used to be cutting edge. Then progress to the electronic mail (AKA email) and even that was once considered to be the crème de la creme. Now evolution has sky-rocketed to social media platforms when information is shared in real time. Social media has revolutionized communications in less than 10 years, with Facebook alone quickly approaching one billion users.
We now live in a time when information is old news if its date stamped five minutes ago. Fans and viewers are out-scooping reputable news agencies. So since you can’t beat them, you must join them. According to the Globe and Mail, it’s necessary to follow the societal trends and evolve your own corporate or organizational strategies to the way the world is moving, or you are going to be left behind in the dust.
However, this does not mean there is a total loss of power. Organizations still have the advantage in controlling the content and delivering of the messaging, as there has to be a reliable source. The advantage to the consumer, is that they no longer have to sieve through information that is of no value to them. Social media will find you. They can now choose, similar to a menu, as to what interests them, and what they want delivered in their inbox.
It’s never too late for those students from the ‘old school’ to jump on the social media bandwagon!
