Langford, BC – December 9, 2019: Another age-grade season has come to a conclusion following the 2019 BC Rugby Junior Boys’ Club Finals, which took place last weekend at Westhills Stadium in Langford, British Columbia. Castaway Wanderers RFC and Abbotsford RFC, who walked away with the U19 and U16 girls’ titles respectively last weekend, were both represented at the boys’ finals along with Capilano RFC, James Bay AA and Vancouver Barbarians.
James Bay AA captured both the U15 and U17 championships, reversing their fortunes from the 2018 U16 boys’ final where a missed conversion kick with time expired resulted in a one-point loss. Meanwhile, Vancouver Barbarians dethroned the reigning back-to-back U19 champion Castaway Wanderers RFC to secure their first U19 boys‘ title.
The event was met with a lot of positive feedback from players and supporters alike. Jared Barker, James Bay U17 Coach, commented "each and every one of our team said it was one of the best experiences of their life. From having the [Pacific] Pride players there to having commentary on the game, the kids felt like they were the most important ticket in town."
A number of thanks must go out to all those who helped make the day such a success. BC Rugby would like to thank everyone who donated over the weekend, either at Westhills Stadium or online at the Charleigh's Journey GoFundMe page. It was very special to have Trevor, Jori, Charleigh and her grandparents there at the stadium throughout the day.
Particular thanks must also be made to the Pacific Pride players (Brock Gallagher, Dewald Kotze, Taitusi Vikilani, D’Shawn Bowen, Siaki Vikilani, Tyler Rowland) for their contributions on and off the field. Finally, we would also like to express a huge thank you to the team staff, therapists, coaches, parents, match officials and City of Langford for helping to make the 2019 Junior Boys’ Club Finals such a success.
