Diving Winter Nationals - Saskatoon

December 11, 2019

Diving Canada - December 11, 2019 – The 2020 Winter National Championships, taking place at the Saskatoon Shaw Centre from December 12th to 15th, will see 44 of the country’s best divers in action just 7 months before the 2020 Olympic Games.

In addition to vying for podium finishes and national titles, this competition will be the last opportunity for many athletes to qualify for the 2020 FINA World Cup (Tokyo, April 21-26, 2020). This international event will be the final chance for Canada to secure Olympic quota spots and plays a critical role in Diving Canada’s selection process for Tokyo 2020.

This week’s competition schedule has been adapted to replicate the Games environment and will be the perfect opportunity for divers to fine tune their competitive strategy. Athletes will go through three rounds of qualification for each individual event, while straight finals will be held for the synchronized events. Spots yet to be filled on the World Cup team are: women’s 3m (1), women’s 10m (1), men’s 3m (2), men’s 10m (2) and men’s 10m synchro (1).

Local star Rylan Wiens will be in contention for World Cup berths on men’s 10m and men’s 10m synchro, where he will be joining forces with Victoria’s Bryden Hattie. Jonah Cey (10m), Alyssa Clairmont (3m / 10m),  Quinn Gariepy (3m), Margo Erlam (3m / 10m), Martine Erlam (3m), and Jamie Spilchak (3m) are the other local Saskatchewan divers to watch out for this week.

Olympians Jennifer Abel (3m / 3m synchro), Meaghan Benfeito (10m), François Imbeau-Dulac (3m / 3m synchro), Philippe Gagné (3m / 3m synchro), Vincent Riendeau (10m, 10m synchro) and Pamela Ware (3m) are also expected to deliver spectacular performances to the fans in attendance at the Shaw Centre and watching online on CBC Sports.
