Pan Canadian School Health Summit Helps Raise Profile of Comprehensive School Health Issues

This week over 500 education, health promotion, active living and research professionals from across the country will gather on Treaty 7 territory for the ninth annual Shaping the Future conference. The largest comprehensive school health conference in Canada, the event will highlight the connections between school health, student well-being and overall learning outcomes, while raising the profile of comprehensive school health issues on a provincial, territorial and national level.

Hosted by Ever Active Schools, the four-day conference addresses current and emerging topics related to comprehensive school health – including healthy eating, physical activity, mental well-being, equity, Indigenous health and natural playgrounds. Participants will partake in a variety of sessions on topics such as tipi building, designing a natural playground and closing the gender gap on girls’ participation in sport and physical activity.

“By bringing together professionals from different sectors, we’re able to expand our own knowledge and understanding of comprehensive school health while also strengthening the collective voice we use to speak on issues of school health and wellness,” said Brian Torrance, director of Ever Active Schools. “Shaping the Future provides a great opportunity to address the critical need for these issues to be a priority for both school communities and policy makers.”

Participants will leave with new connections, ideas and tools they can utilize in their own work across the country, creating a national ripple effect of positive and lasting change for students, educators and school communities.
