Volleyball Canada - Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame member Sandy Silver is remembered for her countless contributions to volleyball. Sandy was a trailblazer, committed to creating positive changes in the sport system. Her passion, effort and support for coaches, athletes and administrators was unwavering. Sandy was a tireless advocate for social justice and was fully invested in moving sport and volleyball forward. She would never hesitate to challenge us all to be better and her influence can be felt from coast to coast.
 
Sadly, Sandy passed away on October 14 after a recent illness, prior to that she remained a regular fixture at the Volleyball Canada National Women’s Training Centre in Richmond offering support and mentorship to athletes and staff alike. Sandy served on Volleyball BC’s Hall of Fame Committee in addition to her work on the bid committee and host committee for the National Women’s Volleyball Training Centre where she chaired the Alumni Committee.

Sandy was a talented athlete and a respected university and international coach. She was the head coach at a number of institutions, including York University and UBC and also served as an assistant coach with the Canadian National Women’s team from 1980 to 1982. Her sporting contributions were extensive and they ranged from volunteering to mentoring to officiating and so much more. Sandy was actively involved in local, provincial and national sporting communities, and spent many years as a volunteer with Volleyball BC providing guidance and leadership to coaches and administrators. For more than 22 years, she was the volunteer convener of Canada West volleyball where she worked diligently to advance the sport. 

Sandy was determined to see more women in leadership roles and never missed an opportunity to encourage, inspire and support future coaches and administrators. Sandy created the Sandy Silver Endowment Fund to support deserving UBC women’s volleyball student-athletes.  

Sandy was inducted in to the Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame, the Volleyball BC Hall of Fame, the UBC Hall of Fame, and received the ProMotion Plus "in her footsteps" award for her impact on girls and women in sport.

"Sandy will be greatly missed by the volleyball community and Volleyball Canada," said the Chair of the Board for Volleyball Canada, Kevin Boyles. "Her passion for the advancement of women and girls in sport has left a legacy and has inspired generations to continue her work. It’s a huge loss for our community."
 
There will not be a formal service in accordance with Sandy’s wishes.
