Triathlon Canada —12 races for competive and age group athletes highlight Canada’s premiere domestic triathlon race set for June 27-28 at the Groupe Copley World Triathlon Montreal—
VICTORIA—Triathlon Canada will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the sport’s inclusion in the Olympic Summer Games by holding the 2020 Canadian Triathlon Championships in conjunction with the Groupe Copley World Triathlon Montreal, June 27-28, on the legendary streets of one of the nation’s oldest cities.
In addition to staging a World Triathlon Series race for the third straight year, the Groupe Copley World Triathlon will determine the kings and queens of Canadian triathlon in elite, under-23, and junior divisions by staging a two-day National Championship/PATCO Continental Cup on the picturesque course. The age group Canadian Triathlon Championships (sprint and standard distance) as well as the Canadian Duathlon Championships (sprint and standard distance) will also be crowned in Canada’s cultural capital.
“Having the opportunity to host major events in all corners of the country is critical to the growth and future success of our sport across Canada,” said Kim Van Bruggen, chief executive officer, Triathlon Canada. “Eastern Canada is extremely passionate for all Olympic and Paralympic sports, and that enthusiasm has definitely been on display at the Groupe Copley World Triathlon over the last three years. We are thrilled to bring our National Championships in the critical Olympic and Paralympic season to this wonderful venue.”
The week will kick off with the final Paralympic qualification race for the world’s best Paratriathletes who will line up in the ITU World Paratriathlon Series, June 24.
Canada’s elite triathletes will once again join age groupers from coast-to-coast to compete in a variety of races available for all ages and abilities throughout the weekend festival.
Age group athletes in sprint and standard distance will also head to the start line June 27-28 for the Age Group Triathlon National Championships and Age Group Duathlon National Championships. Each event will have three 2021 Age Group Triathlon World Championship qualification spots up for grabs to represent Canada in Hamilton, Bermuda and the 2021 Age Group Duathlon World Championships in Townville, Australia. This will be the deepest qualification opportunity in the country.
Canada’s development level athletes will also have a race opportunity before the world’s best to grab the spotlight in Montreal. Youth-based races for U15 and U13 categories as well as community run and open water swim competitions will also be held on June 27. A super sprint race for athletes on the National Development Series preparing to make the jump to PATCO/ITU racing will be held on June 28. This event will crossover with the PACTO C-final to give these young athletes a true taste of the next level of racing.
“Montreal has a long history of staging successful world-class events. After only 4 years, Montreal is already a must-attend favorite destination for the world’s best triathletes, and we’re very excited to attract once more the world’s fastest. We’re equally thrilled to partner with Triathlon Canada and Triathlon Quebec to attract the best amateur triathletes and duathletes on their quest to qualify for 2021 World Championships.” said Patrice Brunet, president of the event.
The world’s best will cap off the weekend triathlon celebration when they put on a show in the ITU World Triathlon Montreal, June 28.
“This will be an incredible opportunity for Montrealers and Canadians alike to watch and cheer on athletes that will be competing only weeks later at the Olympics and Parlympics,” said Van Bruggen. “This is a fast course. It will be action-packed and it will be memorable. With 2020 being a highly-anticipated Olympic and Paralympic year, we are thrilled to have our community together in one of the world’s most renowned cities.”
