Happy New Year!

SIRC’s goal has always been to broaden the knowledge of sport community by providing high quality and timely content in order to enhance the learning experience and stimulate conversation and once again we have succeeded in that endeavor.  In 2014, we aimed to streamline the information sharing process and with the launch of our new website we were able to further expand our services and create an enhanced, user-oriented space for our audience. The website has been a great success and the SIRC team is very proud of all we have accomplished.

SIRC continues to provide many interactive multi-media options such the governance webinar series, the High Performance, Athlete Pathways and Leadership SIRCuits, as well as the job board, SIRC blog and events calendar. We actively increased our online presence by participating in and supporting the many initiatives and events that have happened in the past year – Sochi 2014, RBC Sports Day in Canada, Coaches Week, Sport Canada Research Initiative (SCRI), Skate Canada Figure Skating Championships, Commonwealth Games – and many more.

2015 has been coined the Year of Sport for Canada and we are excited to witness the new successes and share in the celebrations of our athletes in the months ahead. The first major event we look forward participating in is the Canadian Sports For Life Summit, which brings leaders together to enhance the quality of sport and physical activity in Canada. This year’s summit will take place on January 27-29, 2015 at the Hilton Lac-Leamy Hotel in Gatineau-Ottawa. SIRC is pleased to have the opportunity to attend some of the workshops and have our booth available so participants can stop by and say hello.

Since Canada is host to some major sporting events this year we’re going to highlight a few that you don’t want to miss. The year starts off with the Canada Winter Games which take place in Prince George, BC and runs from February 13 – March 1. The Canada Games regularly features new and upcoming athletic talent from across the country – notable former participants include Sidney Crosby, Steve Nash and Hayley Wickenheiser.

Next up is the FIFA Women’s World Cup starting June 6 and taking place in six different host cities: Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton. The Women’s World Cup runs for entire month ending July 5 and is a thrilling addition to the sport calendar for this year.

Finally we have the Toronto 2015 Pan Am & Parapan American Games which are the world’s third largest international multi-sport Games that take place July 10-26 and August 7-15, 2015. The Games will host 42 countries and 48 sports with a grand total of over 30,000 athletes, officials and volunteers working together to create a world-class event.

Cutting edge technology, creative learning and innovative ideas will be the premise as we chart a course for the New Year. The future offers the promise of fresh challenges and the excitement of forming new partnerships and solidifying the current ones. We look forward to exploring opportunities for SIRC to inform, engage and impact the sport community and we aim to push the bar even higher this year.
